How we transformed a symbol of Lebanese pride into millions of donation gateways.

The Lebanese cedar, or the Arze, is the country’s biggest symbol of pride and patriotism. This century-old tree can be found on the national flag, documents, car plates, façades, street art, team jerseys, tattoos, and everything.

Whilst cedar illustrations can be found everywhere, actual cedar forests are vanishing by the minute and climate change is to blame for that. There are only 17 square kilometers of forests in Lebanon right now, making the tree harder to find in nature than on walls, wallets, Lira bills, etc.

With this in mind, we decided to create an interactive donation platform, ArzePay, to raise funds against the extinction of the Lebanese cedar. Using machine learning and built-in cameras, we developed a commerce experience that turns every tree illustration into a donation gateway and a form of fighting climate change. So, people can donate by simply scanning a Lebanese cedar and helping save it. Making the platform just like ApplePay, but for the cedars, and transforming every Arze illustration into a reminder to donate and help save a national symbol.
